hostess gift?
My boyfriends parents invited us to stay with them next weekend in a vacation home they rented in the countryside. I want to show my appreciation by bringing a gift. I'm not sure about wine and food, as I dont want it to seem that whatever we get them, they need to open while we're there. Food isnt out of the question, but do you think thats tacky? I would like them to enjoy the gifts when they want, and not feel obligated to share with everyone. I was thinking of taking them out to dinner one night, but there are two other couples besides us and that could get expensive. In the past, Ive gotten them things for their kitchen, as they both love to cook, but am not sure if giving similar things would be redundant. Maybe a gift basket filled with moderately priced things. Nothing too crazy.

- it isn't tacky to give food....as long as they aren't having a party with food they are already serving....something like a baked loaf of bread works well.....and they should share it with everyone; it's tacky if they don't serve it
- My recommendation is two fold. Given that this is a rented cottage then anything given to them, will require them to bring it back home. Why don't you put together a basket of food and drink items for the whole household to use during the visit. Special treats, small size condiments, etc. so everyone will enjoy a little something extra. After you get home, then send your boyfriend's parents a small thank you gift for including you in their vacation plans. My recommendation is a photograph of all you together taken on the vacation in a lovely frame. This is a thoughtful gift that will mean all the more as it will preserve the memory as well as acknowledge their kindness.
- Here is a website with gifts specifically for hosts/hostesses: http://www.gifts.com/occasions/host-hostess/25ohraicp?page=-1&sort=&featuredidea= I don't think food is tacky (what about a box of nice chocolates?) and if they love to cook then I'm sure they'd like stuff for their kitchen. Go with what you think they would like the most, and if you do food add something memorable as well. (that you aren't going to eat). Like a photo album with one picture in it to start them out or something cute like that.
